Reflections

Christmas shopping in Mainz, Germany, in a supermarket, I forgot that I needed to buy a bag along with my groceries.  So not until after I had paid did I ask the woman if I could have one.

She said, "I am supposed to charge you for this, but because the world we yearn for is not yet dead, I give it to you."

I was stunned to the point of speechlessness.  I walked the streets of Mainz thinking about "the world we yearn for" and how we each, in our own small way,  even with the smallest gestures, might contribute to that dream.
