turning
Turning
Going too fast for myself I missed
more than I think I can remember
almost everything it seems sometimes
and yet there are chances that come back
that I did not notice when they stood
where I could have reached out and touched them
this morning the black shepherd dog
still young looking up and saying
Are you ready this time

the voice of the rain
I am the Poem of Earth, said the voice of the rain,
Eternal I rise impalpable out of the land and the bottomless sea,
Upward to heaven, whence, vaguely form'd, altogether changed.
The Voice of the Rain

Once in a lifetime / Ichi-go ichi-e / 一期一会
The forest leaf falls in a gentle rain, caught by another tree's branch of red buds. Raindrops cling to the buds like translucent crystals. This scene will never be re-enacted in just this way. It is a once in a lifetime treat to witness this unique glimpse into nature's beauty.
Are not our lives composed of many of these unique opportunities, all strung together, second by second, minute by minute? Can we afford to miss any of them?
Life is a gift-- in itself a rare opportunity. Can we afford to squander a single meeting? Can we afford to delay a single sentence to someone we love? Never again will we have just this chance.
Every second, every minute counts.
